Vis Comm II Class Work

So here are some updates on my class work. I've been working with the three before mentioned layouts. Firstly the bait lure layout. Not much concept needed in this layout, just arrange text and sell the lures. I did a hand illustration for this one which I am REALLY satisfied with. The text has been a little tricky, but only because of the arrangement of the illustration. I still need to add in images of the lures, but I haven't bought them yet. I'll get there.

Let's Eat....or not. This layout has been different in the respect that the standard post dispatch crap is on the top and bottom. Other than that I just had to shoot photography for this one and layout the short story. It's extremely short which is always a tricky change up. so I came a colomn in on both sides and gave the layout some air. I also tried to be careful with the colors in the photographs I shot and balance them out since I knew this was gonna be a simpler layout (I wanted the photos to have some tasteful impact.) It's getting there.

Chilis. This one has been heavily concept driven. I'm working on developing an in-store sell concept where theoretically these posters would be hung up in the store, as an added aid in trying to sell the product. The label has been the toughest part. I'm working on trying to arrange a pleasing arrangement of all the necessary parts. Eh. The posters Have been fun to shoot. The main idea is focusing on the reaction to tasting the chili in a contrast of using a tagline that implies that it's no big deal, so grab a can and see for yourself. The taglines are always what snags me up, as they are still doing in these layouts. Oh well. I'll get there.

Vis Comm works

Back to work with ol' Vis Com again. We've been assigned the following designs.

Full-page Newspaper Article Page Design

In keeping with the food theme we are currently working on... I have a new design.
A full-page, 4-color newspaper article about Ramen noodles and creative recipes for their use. Information appropriate for college students, right. Should be fun and something you can practice your studio photography skills. Find the Lets Eat layout shell Folder on my public folder for the layout shell. The space on the page not already used is for you to work with. You will be shooting photography for this design - just a reminder. NO ACQUIRED images!
Budget:
Layout and Design - 3.0 hrs
Final Art production - 1.0 hrs
Artwork/graphics/illustrations - 3.0 hrs

Total 7: hours
For Friday, I want to see initial layout thumbnails and for Monday, I want to see your initial photography. I will be making judgements upon the pics to determine if reshooting is needed. The thumbnail layouts (sketches) will help determine what you need to shoot.

Wick Fowler's Famous 2-alarm chili

We talked about this in class on Friday before break.
I need concept posters and ads and a label design for this well-known product. This chili is known for it's hot and spicy nature. They are proud of it. We are promoting the product and developing a label to stand out on supermarket shelves. Consumers of spicy chili are already sold on the product but the client wants to introduce the product to those who might be first timers and/or those who are timid about the heat. They want converts without alienating the existing customer base.
Here are the specs:
Poster Series: 3 posters, 4 color, one side - size: 15 inch x 21 inch
Layout and Design - 3.0 hrs
Final Art production - 2.0 hrs
Artwork/graphics/illustrations - 3.0 hrs

Ad Series: 3 ads, 2 color (black and one spot) - size: 3 column (newspaper column) x 10 inch - ask me about this...
Layout and Design - 1.0 hrs
Final Art production - 1.0 hrs
Artwork/graphics/illustrations - 1.0 hrs

Label: 4 color - size to be determined by the container size you choose
Layout and Design - 5.0 hrs
Final Art production - 2.0 hrs
Artwork/graphics/illustrations - 3.0 hrs
Find and rebuild their logo in Illustrator.
I want concept ideas and thumbnails on Wednesday 16th.
Total budget: 21 hours

I have had way more success in generating concepts, and am just now getting to the execution of the concepts. More on the way.

Mid Term Vis Comm Portfolio

Here are my finalized pieces that I chose for my Portfolio for Mid terms. The first one is my Herpetology club poster. I had a semi easy time concept wise with this one, however getting taglines to go with it was a real struggle for me on this poster. It took forever and I wound up using my first tagline I came up with, with the addition of 3 words (funny how a couple words can make or break a tagline. ) I don't normally use sex sells on things, however the prospect of nerds and supermodels was too much to pass up. I feel like I could have been more efficient with the tagline development, however I learned some better ways to brainstorm them and think that I will do better on future projects.  Total this piece took 2 hours to complete. Our budget was 6 hours.

The next piece is the Red Barn Arts and Crafts fair poster. This piece also was easier for me concept wise, however this piece was more difficult image wise. It only took me a couple revisions however to get it. Most of the time on this poster was spent massaging and arranging text. I'm pretty happy with this piece. I also really like the logo that I came up with on the bottom of the poster the model is holding. Total this piece took 4.9 hours. Our budget was 6 hours.

The next piece is the How Safe magazine layout. This piece was a challenge because of the small amount of text. most of the time on this piece was spent on working with and re arranging the type to the right side. The polishing aspects of this piece were the section header in the upper right and small amount of spot color.  This piece took 3 hours total. We had 6 hours budgeted on this spread plus an additional hour for photography

The following pieces are the smokey series. These pieces were a lot of fun, however the challenge was being original and not doing the same ads that have been done before. I did some custom photoshop work for the center images and did a lot of type massaging and tagline editing for these. Total these pieces took 4 hours to do. Our budget was 6 hours. Our budget was 9 hours.

My final piece was the stress magazine layout. This piece was ALOT of text revisions and massaging. I really like how all the text works together in this piece and the use of imagery and pull quote. I had issues with headline arrangement and placement of imagery, however after numerous revisions I came to a good final arrangement.  This piece took 7.3 hours to complete, our budget was 12 hours.

I think overall I could have been more efficient with my typesetting and working on things like widows, orphans, and breaks and such. I learned how to brainstorm taglines better however and better ways to develop concept, imagery, and make them work together more cohesively. I think the rest of the semester will see a more effective, efficient design style, and stronger concepts.
